I’m currently working on an alternate game mechanic for the old TSR Marvel Super Heroes game that will allow for quick and easy resolution of tasks without requiring Players and Game Masters to look at the Universal Chart.
I looked into Shadow of the Demon Lord a few times when I was searching for a D&D alternative. Well-done review! I definitely have been leaning into more grimdark themes when it comes to campaign ideas (not that I've run any games in a while) and Shadow of the Weird Wizard sounds really interesting!
I'd be interested to know more about your 4e and old school project. I started with D&D 4e and still really enjoy it, and have been trying to think up ways to incorporate it into any campaigns I run rooted in old school game design.
Thanks for the excellent article. I appreciate your analysis of the Shadow of the Demon Lord mechanics. I've had SotDL on my shelf for a while but have yet to bring it to the table. I enjoyed reading it though, and even bought the SotDL versions of the Freeport adventures, so I'm hoping to play at some point. I supported the Weird Wizard crowdfunding campaign, but I am waiting for the printed version to ship before looking at any of the content. I'm looking forward to your conversions!
I'm working on it and will publish a first article next week. I think it will be enough of a break from what inspired it to become its own rules set, but one which is easy to convert from other systems ranging from Champions and Marvel Super Heroes/Marvel SAGA to DC Heroes and Mutants and Masterminds.
