A great breakdown. My love for the game is largely nostalgic now. At the time, we were all just disappointed that it wasn't Star Wars at a time when that's all we were talking about. That did a disservice to the setting they published, but we were little savages and didn't care. For what it was worth, I went straight from Star Frontiers to Traveller, because I was looking for something that hadn't come out yet. Then, years later, when we DID get Star Wars...I was past it. Capricious youth.
Awesome post. One brief point on Traveller - read the first Dumarest novel -- The Winds of Gath -- and you will def see strong influence on the original setting Marc Miller envisioned.
Star Frontiers was a game I wanted to get however I couldn't afford it at the time. Also, my friends and I were already playing Traveller plus Villains and Vigilantes and Dungeons & Dragons so adding another space based RPG to the roster didn't seem like a good idea.
The other RPG's which TSR had produced, Gamma World and Boot Hill also were highly intriguing but being a broke kid in the early 80's meant you had to be extremely careful with what you used your limited pocket money to buy.
I love SF. I had setup a campaign mashing it up with Empire of the Fading Suns and the indie video game Star Frontiers Traders from the Trees Brothers. Didn't get to play it though.
But really, as weird as the rules are, I do like them. I would alter the Zeb's Guide rules using the marvel/facerip better version of the skill table.
I would love to hear how d20 Modern works in practise. I’ve got most of the line and have only played a scenario of Dawning Star.

Question for the fine connoisseurs: the name Zebulon is not new, it has been used (at least once) in the past... do you remember in which rpg item?
