I really loved the movie version of Color out of Space.,. then it dawned on me what the optics were of Lovecraft specifically writing about a new "color" coming to town and assimilating all the good people. Still a good movie but that thought made me a little queasy.
One of the things that I appreciate about Lovecraft's horror is that he gives us a glimpse into how racism fuels fear. It's one thing to read an academic account of it. It's quite another to read the inner thoughts of someone being driven mad by the diversity of people on the subway.
I actually find it refreshing in a way. He is admitting that fear is what motivates him. He isn't relying on pseudoscience. It's fear of the unknown.
