I feel like a game is truly dead when the fans don't even bother with the game anymore. Team Fortress 2 is a perfect example of a community keeping the game going without much support from the developer(s) well after content has stopped. The game still has an active community that still makes mods, community servers, and game modes created by said community.

On the other hand, there are games like Back 4 Blood or Evolve by Turtle Rock Studios that not only had an inflated reputation but also quickly lost fan support a short time after release. The games suffered from bugs, tedious gameplay loops, and worst of all, microtransactions for triple A priced games. While Turtle Rock tried to jump start fan communities for both games, it just ended up feeling artificial and turned away more people than bringing in due to the initial community not really being in said community for love of the game but because they were payed or given incentives.

Overall, a game truly dies when the players just stop caring, since even without developer content the game can still go on and in some cases thrive years later.

I’m a DM for my 12 year old niece and a few of her friends.

It’s awesome. They love it and I just love the fact that they all use their imaginations for a few hours rather than spend time scrolling through whatever social media they have.
