The robots in the new movie are lifted whole cloth from Grant Morrison’s All Star Superman. If you haven’t read it and are a fan of Silver Age Superman tales (“This is not a hoax!”), do yourself a favor and read it.
Gunn actually didn't direct Brightburn, though it exists in the same universe as Super, which he did.
Will check out Kilmer’s Mars movie asap on that recommendation.
