Well now I HAVE to go and visit Howell's Opera House! It reminds me a bit of Hoxton Hall in London which is also supposed to be haunted. They have a lobby/bar area which was completely empty when I arrived with just a single person in period costume at the bar and faint gramophone music playing - it was very reminiscent of The Shining!
Also, I'd like to add these words mean a lot to me. When a fellow puts in 26 years and it feels like they mostly get forgotten, knowing even one person noticed the achievements means the world.
Your comment is making me push forward a post on Jerry Robinson and the origin of the Joker I've been chipping away at for some time. We need to take time to thank the ground breakers and your early reporting was groundbreaking. Your reporting is always great, but when you started there were very few people covering geek culture and geek genre entertainment seriously.
"I’m still not quite sure, given how the circle included actual working journalists and I was “just” a blogger, how I ended up getting invited to events."
I suspect it was because you were a regular commenter on Cathy's blog. She ended up inviting pretty much everyone from there who was close enough and not anonymous. Another great friend, the late Bradley Fikes, was one such person.
And changing the name of Topless Robot was all me. Nobody forced me; I'd have done it sooner if I could. The simple fact was that companies like WWE and Disney wanted nothing to do with that name. If I wanted access, I couldn't keep it. I also saw value in the Voice brand that I hoped we could leverage.
It is good to know that it was your choice. Given the “attitude era” (which was over by then), I find it a bit surprising that WWE gave pushback. Disney OTOH makes perfect sense.
Hey, thank you for the shut out! Glad you liked some of my rumblings and mumblings about the hobby
Thank you for the review and mention.

Thanks for the kind words about Exploring Warhammer, Christian!

WWE was heavy into the PG era at the time. A publicist literally said to me "We don't like the word topless! We're a PG company!"
I can't imagine Vince McMahon saying that and believing it.
Looks like some beautiful country you got to experience, Christian! ⛰️
