Tabletop Gaming Highlights
Bastionland Presser
Chris McDowell, designer of Bastionland and the forthcoming Mythic Bastionland, has a brief discussion regarding how to deal with it when the GM discovered that they made a rules/ruling mistake later in a session over at his Bastionland Presser website. He provides a nice in play example, boy do I miss reading play examples so it’s nice to see one here, and a brief discussion of the proposed solutions.
The Glatisant: A Questing Beast Newsletter
Ben Milton, creator of a number of interesting OSR style games with New Style mechanics, will be launching the 2nd edition of his Knave role playing game. Knave is a zine sized game with world sized possibilities and has gone on to influence a number of other new wave OSR rpgs. I’m excited to see what he’s bringing to the table now, especially with the upgrades (Hardcover and Peter Mullen artwork) that he’s got in store for us.
Issue #6 of Blaster Magazine on the Horizon
Blaster Magazine, from Electi Studios, is a really interesting publication. It’s a table top miniatures skirmish magazine that discusses the miniatures hobby and brings full length Table Top Miniatures games to the table. The magazine is written by a talented team of designers and content creators, their work includes Frostgrave and Gaslands, and each issue has a theme. In the past, this theme has been done anthology style with several authors writing about the theme, but starting with issue #6 each issue of the magazine will be written by a single author.
This month that author is Alex C. Van Allen, the designer of the Nightfall miniatures skirmish game, who will be presenting his Western skirmish game Dead by Lead in the June issue
Comic Book Updates
Zubby Newsletter #5
Jim Zub, comic writer extraordinaire (Skullkickers, Pathfinder, Munchkin), has announced that he is the author of the new ongoing Conan series from Titan Comics. The inclusion of Zub will ensure that the Titan title maintains the entertaining tone that Zub had in his Marvel run and in his other works. Zub’s a fun writer and I can’t wait to get my free copy of Conan #0 on Free Comic Book Day.
IDW Publishing D&D Cartoon Based Comic Book
The first issue of IDW’s Saturday Morning Adventures Dungeons & Dragons comic book hit stores recently. The series features characters familiar to fans of the old D&D cartoon, characters who were briefly featured in the new Dungeons & Dragons movie. I’ll be reviewing the first issue shortly and comparing it to another time the “kids” were featured in comic book adventures.
Movie Recommendations
Criterion Streaming Service Features Films by David Lynch
David Lynch is a creative an unique voice whose surreal storytelling has captured the minds of many generations. Criterion Channel is featuring a number of his films this month, including his peculiar vision of Frank Herbert’s Dune.
David Lynch’s Dune is an evocative presentation of the classic science fiction story. Though it takes many liberties, and even counting the excellent quality of last year’s Villeneuve directed Dune, there is artistic genius in Lynch’s version. Stop by the Criterion Channel and give it a go, or if you aren’t a subscriber there just go out and buy the damn movie. It’s a masterpiece.
That’s it for now.
Have a great weekend!
