Whenever I think of the early game's initiative systems, I also start comparing to the initiative system in Magic Realm (AH, 1979) which took a lot of these systems and formalized them... into a system that was just as confusing.

Since you linked the older version, I republished it. The articles are very similar and I brought it over here because I'm trying to migrate older stuff to the new Substack.

Now I have to pull out my copy of Magic Realm. If anyone can make initiative rules more confusing it’s Avalon Hill.
