I sadly don't read much fiction anymore. The last fantasy novel I remember reading in its entirety was 'Piranesi' a few years ago. I thought it's a great book (though the ending was a little anticlimactic) about isolation and was kind-of perfectly timed, given the start of Covid.

I remember starting 'Dune Messiah' recently and didn't get through the beginning. Maybe I'll pick that up again as the film trilogy nears completion.

I'm also sad about the lack of conversation pieces on Substack. I hated it when the platform removed Threads post in favor of 'Chat.' I don't think Chat is really working that well for discussions.

It's excellent. Like most Justin Grimmer texts it does have mathematical representations of the processes in it, but it walks you through the logic thoroughly. There are a couple of GitHub depositories that have exercises using R that based on some chapters that really flush things out.

To make this work for me, I have to take the genre out.

What was the last book you finished reading? The Bible Says So, by Dan McClellan

What was the last sf/f/h book you did not finish reading and why?

Not counting ones I'm currently reading, Doomsday Clock, the DC Watchmen sequel. I didn't finish because of the small print and my not having had my eyes tested properly. I'll get back to it someday.

What was the last sf/f/h book you read that you liked but most people didn’t?

Probably the Jack Chick tract where church people in an airplane crash die and then get casually tossed into hell by angels for not having made enough converts in life.

What was the last book you read that you disliked but most people liked?

I don't know if disliked is the right word but I couldn't make much heads or tails of Batman Dark Nights: Metal

How long do your 1-sitting reading sessions usually last?

Until the puppy/cat/wife interrupts.

What are you currently reading?

The Bible (NRSV) cover-to-cover, Bart Ehrman's How Jesus Became God, and Lee Strobel's Case for Christ

Do you like it so far?

Ehrman is very interesting though I don't always agree with his conclusions, and it's most interesting that he and Strobel use some of the same arguments to arrive at different places. Strobel is disappointing and kinda predictable; The Bible has many surprises -- I've liked Judges best so far.

How long ago did you buy the book you are currently reading (or the last book you read)?

They were all gifts except the study Bible, which I bought after gifting my grandfather my previous copy, at least 20 years ago.

What was the last physical book you bought?

For myself? I forget the title but it was a thrift store buy about the role slaves played in writing the Bible (you may be sensing a theme by now).

What is the sub-genre you like the most and why?

Autobiography/experiential. I think it comes from being an actor and wanting to know about the character.

What is the sub-genre you dislike the most and why?

Fundamentalist apologetics, except Chick comics as noted above, which are their own art form.

What is your favorite electronic reading device?

my laptop

What was the last sf/f/h eBook you bought?

I don't do ebooks, unless they are sent to me for work.
