Its been reported that Tolkien was influenced by the Leatherstocking series by Cooper for Aragorn and the rangers.
I also feel, despite official stats, that Tanis Half Elven is a ranger.
In my headcanon, Tanis is always a Ranger. That's interesting about Tolkien and the Leatherstocking tales. I'll look more into that for sure.
I read Edmund Spenser in university and absolutely loved it. Easy to see how it influenced D&D - thanks for bringing that up!
