Electric Frankenstein - great band! On a trivial personal note, Sal Canzonieri from EF has taught qigong classes near me. I also humbly recommend "The Siege and Investiture of Baron von Frankenstein’s Castle at Weisseria" by Blue Öyster Cult for your Frankenstein-themed playlist.
I haven't recommended much Blue Öyster Cult in a while, but that certainly needs to change. Perhaps when I do my "All Michael Moorcock" Weekly Geekly later this year.
Thank you for the shout-out! I love your point about gatekeeping as an old phenomenon too. People, regardless of the fandom or subculture, can end up being snooty or know-if-alls. It doesn't require the internet to be a gatekeeper, that's for sure!
And can I just say I'm loving all this Frankenstein-related stuff! I've been teaching the novel to my high school students the past two years and having a blast, but this coming school year I decided to switch things up and teach something different. With the del Toro movie coming out, I'm having second thoughts!! LOL! The James Whale Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, and Mel Brooks's Young Frankenstein are some of my favorite movies.
I think it's great that you were teaching your high school students Frankenstein, but I also appreciate that it's good to mix things up from time to time. I think one of the reasons some high school students don't get as interested in some books as they might otherwise is that they can sense their teachers' fatigue. Sometimes we need to take a breather from even great novels/movies/etc.
Of course, the del Toro movie does guarantee it will be fresh on the minds of the students.
Teacher fatigue is real, and as much as I liked teaching my "monster-themed" works, I've decided to do a fairy tales theme, so we are reading Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Alice's Adventures/Through the Looking-Glass. Maybe we'll watch Frankenstein any way, just as a bit of fun! (Or, if I teach a film class this year, I'll do a Whale vs. del Toro screening of both Frankensteins!!)

I'm looking forward to that one!

Alice Cooper has another Frankenstein that, IMO, is even better.
