I like it. In my tinkering with BECMI I revised the halfling some. I figured elf was fighter/magic user and dwarf was fighter, then halfling should be fighter/thief. So I kept everything but added all the thief abilities except backstabbing.
But that was in the 90s.
I added "rangers" with the skill selection from the gazetteers but then I realized I was just making AD&D and decided to just play AD&D.
A Fighter/Thief Halfling would be excellent and I think you've got a good start there.
One of the things I really liked about the Gazetteers was how they helped me think of ways to reskin existing classes under new themes. The Rake and Forester weren't as "balanced" as I'd like, but they were a great start. I think I'll post an alternate Rake soon that captures the full Swashbuckler nature of the concept. It won't be OP, because no BECMI class is, but it will be cool.
I reckon the reacher should get 2d4 hit dice at first level for the sake of tradition. He also needs to have some ability to win surprise rolls to simulate ambush attacks.
I really like the hobbit as ranger idea. Good job.
Ooh, I like those recommendations and those can make up for the loss of the AC bonus vs. Large. I thought about still giving them that to simulate Rangers vs. Giants, but ended up thinking that Halflings should have something to distinguish them from Rangers.
I'll have to review the surprise rules in B/X again, which will take mere moments, but I'll be incorporating that into a full entry at some point in the future.

Do one on the bard. Please and thank you.
Before I begin my series on the Bard, you'll need to gain seven levels as a Thief and eight levels as a Fighter.
