"Going to the Match" by Lawrence Stephen Lowry

The painting by L.S. Lowry that Stuart Clarke describes as "the best and in a sense the only painting of football ever" can be found below. Its setting is outside Burnden Park, home of Bolton Wanderers F.C. from 1895 until 1997 before they moved to Reebok Stadium. In what was then the largest disaster in FA history, 33 people died in crowd trouble on March 9, 1946. After Hillsbourough, it was recognized that the stadium was no longer suitable for top flight soccer.
