The Guy Who Was Great

Doom and Gloom, Sturm und Drang. The blogosphere is bad for you. It makes you atomized, so concerned with yourself that you don’t care about your fellow man. What's the mechanism, you may ask. Who knows? But we do have some neat descriptive statistics that have raised our hackles.

Unlike our historical predecessors, who were too stupid to realize that they were living in the past, we know for a fact that modern mass communication is worse for you than:

  • Socrates
  • Mass-produced books
  • Mass-produced books in the vernacular
  • Newspapers
  • Telegraphs
  • Telephones
  • Movies
  • Televisions
  • E-mail
  • Cell phones

Sure, our forefathers complained about the socially corrosive effects of all those media, but this time I tell you, we’re right!

Anyway, it couldn’t be our despicably poor secondary and primary education systems that fail to produce students worthy of a liberal education, right? I mean, blogs and other accouterment of modern information technology may only be a symptom of a larger problem, and not the cause, right?

At least we still have “Must See T.V.” to bring us all together.

I jest. Mark Bauerlein is smarter than that.
