Garfield and Economics

Today's Slate has an article regarding Jim Davis and his Garfield character. It seems that Jim Davis has always viewed his cartooning from an economic perspective with cross marketing techniques. Kind of like Lucas when he created the first Star Wars movie and used licensing in ways no one had ever conceived. I haven't seen the new Garfield film yet, but I will and Jody and I will discuss it and share our views with you later.

You would think that making a good movie would increase the economic advantage Jim Davis hoped to recoup from his cartooning efforts. According to http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/Garfield-1133038/reviews.php, this movie stinks. Maybe that's okay, because it doesn't seem as if the box office has suffered.
