Playing Hard Ball

From Playing Hard Ball: A Kent County Crickerter’s Journey Into Big League Baseball (2003, pg. 143)

But logic goes out of the window where dynasties are concerned. The cuts are too deep. I once met a salesman who is a Mets fan. “The more I hate the Yankees,” he said, “the more they win.” Try not hating them, then? “That’s what my missus says, man. It’s logical, I know, and I do try, but I just can’t help it. I hate those damned Yankees!”

In truth that is the highest compliment of all. Dynasty hatred is the simplest form of hate: pure envy. Because no matter what we may say about underdogs, bigger pictures and not-just-the-winning, deep down we all know how much fun being a dynasty must be.
